About Us
Artisans such as weavers, blacksmiths, carpenters, handicraft makers etc. form a major component of workforce involved in non-farm segment, especially in rural areas. These artisans are regarded as custodians of heritage of India and play a very important role in village life through their repair and maintenance services. This informal sector possesses a vast potential for employment, generation of rural income and strengthening of rural people.
But in present times these artisans and their skills are rapidly fading away in-face of massive competition from industrialization and globalization. Unable to compete with these forces most the artisans are facing acute poverty and backwardness. Lack of formal education, skill, exposure to technology and marketing support has worsened their situation.
This is where the grassroots level organization Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor (MMBA) has stepped in with its initiative to train, educate, provide support and empower the members of this group, especially women and youth in districts of Barmer and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.
MMBA has trained Artisans in our work area in various skills of artistry such as embroidery, stitching, patchwork, and zari work etc. Now the artisans are producing cushion covers, salwar suits, quilt covers, bags, mobile covers and covers for glasses.
